As they age, seniors face unique challenges, such as losing a spouse and elderly friends, changes in physical and mental abilities, and other general lifestyle changes that often occur during the golden years. Living in a comfortable and familiar environment becomes paramount to a senior’s happiness and feelings of well-being. As the relative, friend or caregiver of a senior, it is important for you to help seniors achieve this goal.

One area that deserves special attention with seniors is managing medications they take. Chances are the number of medications they are required to take increases with age, as seniors are often prone to medical conditions that are regulated by medicine. Taking the medications is important. However, it is equally important for seniors and their family caregivers to understand what medicine the senior takes, to become knowledgeable about side effects, and also to determine whether there appear to be adverse effects of taking different types of medications at the same time. Mismanagement of medications can be detrimental and sometimes even life threatening.

Medication mismanagement can be minimal or extreme. Forgetting to take medication can cause obvious problems but may not be of great concern if it does not happen often. But, combining some types of medicines can cause critical adverse reactions and if a senior is required to take painkillers, addiction can raise its ugly head. For these reasons it becomes essential to keep seniors well informed of the hazards mismanagement of medications can cause and to keep the doctor informed all of medications the senior is taking and of any apparent adverse side effects.

Signs of medication misuse include dizziness, nausea, confusion and memory issues, increased falls, troubled sleeping patterns, incontinence, and even hallucinations. Malnutrition can also indicate improper medicine administration, because confused seniors may not eat properly. Seniors who become addicted to painkillers may become secretive regarding their use of those drugs and seek prescriptions from various doctors and pharmacies. In extreme but not uncommon cases, some medications – when mixed – can cause death.

Seniors who have trouble successfully managing medications are not alone. In fact, research indicates that approximately 40% of people entering nursing homes do so because they are unable to self-medicate in their homes. In addition, 30% of all hospital admissions for people over age 65 are directly attributable to missed doses or overdoses of medication.

With these statistics in mind, the medical community has offered advice and other solutions to help seniors manage medications in their own homes. When family members visit, it is an opportunity to remind seniors to take their meds at designated times. If possible, seniors are encouraged to keep logs of the times they take their medications in order to keep track, determine the time of their next dose and to prevent over-dosage. Home health care companies, such as Comfort Keepers®, offer solid solutions in the form of medication reminder devices. The Safety Choice® TabSafe Medication System by Comfort Keepers stores medication and dispenses the proper dosage into a locked drawer at the bottom of the unit. If a dose is missed, the unit places a call to designated Comfort Keeper or other contact persons who can then call to remind loved ones to take their medicine. If no one is reached, a call to the monitoring station prompts a call or visit to the client or caregiver.

The use of one or all of these strategies can assist seniors who take multiple medications. It is also essential to make sure their doctors know of all medications seniors take so they can coordinate care and prescribe additional medicine, when needed, that will not cause adverse effects when combined with other meds. Others should keep a close eye on seniors who take medications to ensure seniors are properly administering their own meds.

Research shows seniors who live alone are more likely to inadvertently misuse medications. Knowledge is power, but control is key regarding medication management. The reward in helping seniors properly manage their medication is helping them achieve their ultimate goal of living healthy, independent lives in their own homes for as long as possible.
And that means fresh fruits and vegetables straight from the garden, food co-op, roadside stand or local grocery. As a caregiver, you can help the senior in your life eat well, enjoy the best of the season’s bounty, and reap the benefits of healthy eating.
Eating well this season is about fresh, colorful food, and on many occasions, eating out of doors with family and friends which adds to the pleasure. For older adults, there are particular benefits of healthy eating. They include increased mental acuteness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, faster recuperation times and better management of chronic health problems. Eating well can also be the key to a positive outlook and staying emotionally balanced.
MyPlate for Older Adults, developed by Tufts University researchers to replace the USDA food pyramid, continues to emphasize the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables in the senior diet. Included among the recommendations of MyPlate are eating bright-colored vegetables such as carrots, zucchini, summer squash, and broccoli, and deep-colored fruit such as plums, berries and melon. Foods with high water content such as lettuce, garden fresh tomatoes, watermelon, homemade fruit and vegetable juices are good for seniors to add hydration especially during the heat of summer. Soups, such as gazpacho, which can be made from fresh vegetables and served chilled during warm weather are ideal and healthful, too
It is a real safety concern for those whose everyday health and wellbeing depend on taking the right dose of the right medication at the right time.
According to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, more than one-third of medication-related hospitalizations are due to patients not taking their medicines as directed. Additionally, medication non-adherence has also been associated with as much as 40 percent of nursing home admissions, notes the American Pharmacists Association.

Medication management can be a pill box to a complex medication dispensing machine. Sometimes a person cannot manage a pill box due to eye sight or memory issues. This may be time to start to think about the dispenser or an aide to come in the home and make sure the right meds are taken.

When I am asked about dispensing machines the first question I ask is what does your loved one need? If I am told it is significant memory issue where the person is forgetting to take the meds I talk to the family about what the medication dispenser can do and what it cannot do.

What it cannot do is make sure those meds get into the mouth. It can send signal to the family if the dispensed meds are not picked up from machine but no family can be assured that if they meds are picked up they made it to person's mouth. Sometimes seniors will take the meds off dispenser go into another room sit the cup down and forget to take them. This behavior means you need an aide, a physical person to come into the room and watch the person take them.

If you have questions feel free to contact me. The medication dispenser is helpful but with all care we need to talk about what does the loved one really need. Often what we think will solve the problem does not. Talking it out we can come up with creative solution to solve the problem usually.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01486289334403665735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1594519434678704587.post-4821617201544236952016-02-16T10:04:00.000-05:002016-02-07T13:49:50.041-05:00Resources for Parkinson's, Alzheimers and other Illness LocallyAre you in need of support and resources for a long term illness such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, MS and others here locally in the Philadelphia area?
As one ages staying active in any way you can and engaged with others is vital to a healthy life.

If you are caring for someone with dementia or physical impairment it is sometimes challenging to figure out how to keep the person active or engaged. Taking a few minutes to figure out or find out what a person likes to do and then modifying it can make a world of difference for you and your loved one.

For example men often like to assemble or fix things. Many older men with memory impairment are frustrated because they can no longer fix pipe or put together an item from a box. If we find something that the person can do such as one pipe that has to be screwed into another one and then couple more elbows the person can put that together and feel like he or she is accomplishing something.

Sometimes referred to as adult Legos the items are loose in box and can be assembled as two pieces or three or even four depending on what your loved one is able to do. Once he puts it together then have him take it apart and do it again like a puzzle.

Always treat everyone with respect and dignity. Be creative and figure out an activity that your loved one can do that does not hurt feelings or make him feel less than. Curious I asked "What is Guitar With Gloria?" and that was the start of a conversation you should hear. The lady, Gloria Hoffner told me her story of having been a journalist for many years for Philadelphia Newspapers. As her career in the field of journalism started to wind down, Gloria like many folks wanted a new career in a field where she could earn money but enjoy herself doing something she loved. Having been in a band in high school and being in love with music much of her life, she decided to explore her options in the music field. She started a business called Guitar With Gloria where she would offer her services to sing at nursing homes and assisted living centers throughout Delaware County. Although her business grew rapidly she continued to volunteer her time as a member of the Chichester Alumni Band. Curious again I asked "What is the Chichester Alumni Band?" To which she answered:

"The Chichester Alumni Community Band's members are graduates of Chichester and is open to everyone who ever played in a high school band. We have members from Notre Dame, Sun Valley, Cardinal O'Hara, Swarthmore - a great mix of wonderful people.,

Here is the back ground....Kathryn Forwood started the Chi high school band in the 1950s when she was hired as a choral teacher. Her life long dream was to be a band leader but she had to fight West Chester University who told her "you can't take conducting classes because there are no women band conductors" and later the high school who said "there will be no woman band director at this school". She pressed forward, started the band and after she retired the school named the auditorium in her honor.

Later at a reunion, her former students came together and formed the Chi Alumni band to play and surprise her. They later decided to stay together as an alumni band. A few years later at the request of community residents who did not attend Chi, the band added "community" and welcomes all former band members of any high school. The band also has a band front.

The band plays a concert once a month at a local nursing home, a summer outdoor community concert in Marcus Hook and participates in local parades. The band presents a scholarship each year to a Chi grad majoring in music in college.

Our director Audrey Murphy, is a graduate of Chi, and has her masters in music. She directed a high school band in Delaware and is now retired." said Gloria.

"Wow!" I replied. "This sounds like a great activity for senior citizens and retirees in the community and they probably don't know anything about it".

As a caregiver, managing the nutritional needs of your senior client or family member can be a challenge, but here are some practical diet tips that will help you to make planning and cooking nutritious meals a pleasurable experience for you both.
In general, changing to a more healthy diet is in every person’s short and long term best interest. But for older adults, there are particular benefits of healthy eating. They include increased mental acuteness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, faster recuperation times and better management of chronic health problems. For seniors, eating well can also be the key to a positive outlook and staying emotionally balanced.
As we age, good nutrition is essential. Our metabolic rates slow down and we tend to need fewer calories because we are not generally as physically active as we once were. So making sure that the senior you care for is eating nutrient-dense foods and making the most of the calories that they do eat becomes more necessary.
Might we suggest volunteering?

There are tons of volunteer opportunities for all interests and all ages right here in Delaware County, PA. Are you a people person? Do you like to sit and talk? Maybe visiting home bound older adults is something you would like to do.

Want to make a difference but you are more active and less social? If so Meals on Wheels often needs volunteers.

Maybe you loss someone and you would like to give back? If so Hospice is always looking for great people to sit and talk or read to patients.

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, contact COSA, the County Office Service of Aging, they can give you some direction on where to go. www.delcosa.org.
