Walked 5 miles to school in the snow in my day.

One of the lines parents used to tell their kids was "well in my day we walked 5 miles to school in the snow". If you ever heard this line you like me probably rolled your eyes and thought yeah right, you walked 5 miles to school and in the snow?

Well, I am sure some of our parents walked to school in the snow but I don't know about 5 miles. If you watch show like Little House on the Prairie you can see how yes some kids in 1800's probably did walk a long way to school in all kinds of weather. There were no automobiles, no school buses, no neighbors to report you for sending your child out in that kinda weather, you just did what you had to do.

And I think that is the real meaning behind "well in my day we walked 5 miles to school in the snow" - do what you have to do to survive, to get an education, to work, to live life fully".

As it snows today, it makes me reflect on how as a society we have changed. Our kids will play video games after getting out of school early while our elderly parents will try to get out and shovel the walk even though we told them hundred times not to do it.

If the schools are closed tomorrow the kids will be bored by lunchtime while our elderly parents will have not only shoveled their entire driveway but will probably be next door helping someone or checking on a widow to make sure she has food.

It's interesting to think about, especially when you are standing in the kitchen yelling or negotiating with your child about shoveling the driveway. It wouldn't surprise me if you catch yourself saying something like "in my day I was told to go shovel the driveway" ending it however it worked in your family.

Interesting how things have changed. Stay safe in the snow today!

  1. Very humorous take on the old saying. I think indeed in the future we will say "In my day, I was told to go shovel the driveway!" I don't think kids will ever get tired of playing in snow, but certainly shoveling it. You stay safe as well!
