Wearing a boot on his left foot, Lawrence Bidgell sat next to Kristin Ball Motley in a consulting room at the Episcopal Place at Park Row as the pharmacist-turned-entrepreneur delved into her follow-up examination of the 67-year-old.
In October, Bidgell enlisted the services of Motley and her business, Health Care Solutions of Delaware Valley, to evaluate his medications. She did an analysis and created a chart that explained when and why he was to take different prescriptions at different times.
He followed it and took his meds at the prescribed times, rather than skipping them.
“That was enlightening to me,” Bidgell said of Motley’s instructions. “The bottom line is I feel better.”
Two years ago, Motley formed Health Care Solutions of Delaware Valley after a friend’s mom who had recently had heart surgery was unable to pay the $600 for needed medications.
Upon learning that, she said to herself, “I have to do something to help people. They don’t know that there’s help there.”
After graduating from Chester High School, Motley obtained her doctorate of pharmacy from Florida A&M University. After her residency, she joined the faculty at Hampton University, where she developed a medication management program for an immunization clinic there serving a low socioeconomic population.
When she returned to the area and learned of her friend’s mom, she went to the Widener University Small Business Development Center, where she turned her business concept into a reality.
In 2010, she started it and last April, she devoted herself to it full time. She currently has 50 clients.
Her focus with HCS is twofold. First, she provides the medication management service in which she reviews an individual’s prescription intake to analyze patient compliance, side effects, dosing and other elements. The initial one-hour review is $150 and annual follow-ups are $75.
Secondly, she offers a medication cost savings component in which she finds ways for clients to pay less for their medications.
