Residents, staff, friends, co-workers and well wishes celebrated the career of Joyce McCormick recently with a send-off retirement party at Sterling Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Media.
Joyce, an activity professional, has brought the joy of music, food, laugher as well as spiritual comfort to residents of three long term care communities in Media. She began her career at Manchester House and when this facility closed she moved to Bishop Nursing Home on Orange Street. Eleven years ago when Bishop was sold and became Sterling Healthcare and Rehabilitation, Joyce continued her legacy of caring.
At Sterling, Joyce played the organ at festive parties celebrating national events. At her organ keyboard, she led residents and staff in the singing of “Grand Old Flag” on the 4th of July, “Count Your Blessings” on Thanksgiving and for many years’ organized Christmas pageants.
She also used her musical talents to bring comfort and joy when visiting one-on-one with residents too ill to leave their rooms.
Joyce is not a one-hit wonder! Along with her musical abilities, she proved herself a master of culinary expertise. Residents all have their favorite memories of the food she whipped up in her monthly cooking corner. These ranged from homemade ice cream and strawberry sundaes to fresh baked pretzels. She was known for her fabulous baked treats and the mouth-watering funnel cakes she made twice a year at the Sterling indoor carnival.
Most of all, Joyce brought her deep spiritual beliefs to her weekly Bible study class that included, hymn sings, scriptural readings and religious themed crafts.
Joyce, originally from Wallingford and now living in Havertown, is a widow and the mother of two children and several grandchildren.
Nancy Newman, Sterling activity director, said, “Joyce is a true treasure who has blessed the lives of our residents for so many years. She will be truly missed and we wish her all the joy in retirement that she gave to us throughout her career.”
