Undernourishment and malnutrition are serious problems for America’s growing 65+ population. In fact, as many as half of all seniors cared for at home suffer from being under- or mal-nourished (Mayo Clinic/American Dietetic Association).
“Malnutrition and under-nourishment in seniors are not always obvious, so caregivers and loved ones should pay special attention to the signs,” said Sallie Bongaardt, owner of Comfort Keepers® in Springfield, PA. “About 30 million older Americans live with chronic diseases that nutrition therapies can effectively manage and treat, so some simple dietary changes can make a big difference for seniors.”
To raise awareness for this growing problem, Comfort Keepers has partnered for the month of February with Dianna Armstrong, Market Manager of Citadel’s Springfield location. The two companies are participating in the nationwide Serving Seniors, Nourishing Lives Campaign an initiative of Comfort Keepers franchise system to benefit Feeding America® food distribution network.
“Partnering with Citadel to collect food donations for low income seniors is a natural fit for us” said Sallie Bongaardt of Comfort Keepers. “Dianna Armstrong of Citadel is very committed to community service and providing our seniors with information and assistance to help them maintain the best quality of life, the same philosophy we are committed to at Comfort Keepers, customer service, treating our seniors with dignity and respect are our priorities” she continued.

Citadel located at 943 W. Sproul Rd, Springfield, PA 19064 will be collecting canned goods and dry food donations to help Stop Senior Hunger throughout the month of February. Comfort Keepers® recommends the following foods for donation: peanut butter, low-sodium canned vegetables and soups, and protein-rich meal substitutes.

The Springfield Citadel is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 5pm, Fridays from 8:30 am to 7pm and on Saturday from 9am to 2pm. The Brookhaven Citadel located at 4923 Edgemont Ave, Brookhaven is also a Stop Senior Hunger collection site and has the same hours of operation. If you can spare a can, drop it off at either location. To read more about Citadel click HERE.
